Direct rail services from London to cities in Germany and Holland could be in operation by 2013 if a formal application by Deutsche Bahn (DB) to run trains through the Channel Tunnel is approved.

The German train operator is the first continental rail company to express an interest in competing with Eurostar on the line since it was opened up to other operators in January 2010.
