Steve Butcher joined Northern Rail in 2005 as area director north, with responsibility for operations and stakeholder management in the North East, Lancashire and Cumbria. In 2008, he moved to become area director east before being promoted to the newly-created post of chief operating officer earlier this year - a role which includes co-ordinating day-to-day operations across the franchise.
