Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) are likely to have continued to blur distinctions between travel time and activity time by 2020.

They will have further equipped us to personalise our experience of public transport and will provide a rich array of possibilities of how to use our time in the highly connected ‘always on’ world we will all inhabit. Flexibility in time use on the move will counter unreliability and diminish the primacy of journey speed.

However, will our lives be enhanced as a result? Travel time can represent a ‘protected space’ in busy lives – time to relax, reflect or switch off: but ICTs are infecting that time as we become expected to be on call and online even in transit.
