Stansted expansion plans hit by passenger drop

Opponents of Stansted Airport expansion say a 10% drop in passengers last year shows that BAA’s case for a second runway is crumbling.

Passenger numbers fell from 22.3 million to 20.0 million and the number of flights fell 11.8% from 177,157 to 156,242.

The airport already has planning approval to expand to 35 million passengers a year. A second runway would increase capacity to 68 million and 495,000 flights.
