Government pledges £401m for regional rail upgrades

Investment for the Transpennine route upgrade, increased freight capacity between the Port of Southampton and Midlands plus new stations at Exeter and Leeds

The UK government has announced that £400m will be spent on improving passenger and freight rail services across the North, Midlands and the South.

There will be an investment of £317m into the Transpennine route upgrade, which the Department for Transport (DfT) said will improve punctuality, reliability and connectivity for passengers between York, Leeds and Manchester.
