Cycling and Walking Innovations 2021: Virtual event 26 January

Our streets, transport infrastructure and public spaces should encourage people to safely walk, scoot and cycle as a means of everyday transport

14 January 2021

This popular one-day summit and expo, now in its 4th year, will highlight how progressive local authorities, supported by service suppliers and consultancies, are making the most of new thinking and new opportunities.

Last year's £2 billion 'walking and cycling revolution' has been supported by the £250m Department for Transport's Emergency Active Travel Fund (EATF) and the Active Travel Fund, which invested in pop-up infrastructure to support cycling and walking during – and after – the pandemic. The DfT is also supporting an ongoing review of the Highway Code, which hopes to create a clearly understood and easily enforceable ‘hierarchy of responsibilities' for all road users, and to protect the most vulnerable, and the roll out of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods.

  • The DfT has published the second tranche of £175 million for cycling and walking in its Active Travel Fund allocations, with schemes currently in development

  • DfT survey results show that 8 out of 10 people support measures to reduce road traffic, and two-thirds support reallocating road space for active travel

  • 2020 saw the announcement of a £2 billion 'walking and cycling revolution', an ongoing review of the Highway Code, and the roll-out of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods
