Dockless systems behind ‘bike graveyards’ in China

The rapid rise in dockless bike schemes in China has resulted in cities being saturated with bikes with insufficient demand for them. This has led to the rise of ‘bike graveyards’ across the country, where bikes are simply dumped.

Once hailed as ‘Uber for bikes’, China’s cycle hire start-ups allowed users to unlock GPS-enabled bikes with their smartphone, and drop them off anywhere without the need to park it at a dock.
