A clean alternative to fossil fuel made chiefly from formic acid, which is found in stinging nettles and certain species of ant, is being tested in the Netherlands. 

Formic acid is simple carboxylic acid (HCOOH), which is manufactured for use in textiles and leather processing and as a livestock feed preservative.
