Newspapers including The Daily Mail have highlighted research suggesting that cycling helps you live longer, and this may justify public policies to promote cycling.

The five-year study of more than quarter a million UK commuters found that eight tenths of even mixed-mode cycling commuters were achieving physical activity guidelines, compared to only 51% of non-active commuters, and had a lower risk of death. The Daily Mail's health editor said that although cycling has obvious health benefits, the study is the first to show how it compares to walking or taking the bus". However, the article adds that "traffic fumes could reduce the benefits".
