May backs Northern Powerhouse motorway upgrades, high-speed rail, and cycling schemes

Theresa May today uses a Yorkshire Post article to affirm her Government's commitment to the former Chancellor-driven Northern Powerhouse project "to help the great cities and towns of the North pool their strengths and take on the world".

She also confirms support for investment "to transform key roads like the M62, the M1 and A1". And she backs high speed rail "not just from north to south but also from east to west" and supports improvements "right across Yorkshire," singling out new railway stations at Kirkstall Forge and Apperley Bridge. She announces £15m for cycling infrastructure projects as part of a new £24m package to bring cycling's World Road Championships to Britain.

But the overall funding envelope she refers to is the £13bn of David Cameron's Government, despite calls for new investment following economic uncertainty and loss of funding caused by the vote to leave the European Union. She ends the article saying that Yorkshire is "on the rise".
