Taxi merger will create 'mega operator'

A merger between the two leading Sheffield taxi companies should create one of the largest taxi firms in the country.

City Taxis will take over Mercury Taxis on June 1; the combined business will employ more than 1,400 drivers. City takes around 75,000 job calls per week, and both companies together account for 110,000. City alone has 1,000 public and private sector accounts.

As well as Sheffield, the new company also serves Rotherham, Barnsley and North Derbyshire.
