A new angle on EV parking

Dave Holladay says angled parking bays could provide a safe space for drivers, passing cars and cyclists

Parking with EV chargers

By arranging angled parking bays, which force drivers to reverse in from the direction of travel on a street, especially if the driver's door opens into the ‘protected wedge’ created by the adjacent parking bay, two risk management measures are delivered by default:

  • the driver's door does not immediately violate the space used by cycles and other moving wheeled traffic
  • when moving off the driver has a clear view of approaching wheeled traffic on the carriageway pavement.

Some thoughtful arrangement perhaps for placing EV charge connections, and possibly low guide kerbs to assist less competent drivers can keep vehicles neatly parked.

The kerbside wedges can provide small rain gardens, to reduce rainfall flows in side gullies, possibly with low growing bushes to deter obstruction of the footway pavement with rear overhang.

This also removes the obstruction delivered on a footway by the growing number of EV charging pillars, with the associated tangle of loose cable (and non compliance - Section 162 HA1980, BS7909, IEE Regs 19th Edition, etc.) when these are lying around to trip up pedestrians.?Can I cut the ribbon for the first one to be delivered?
