New Year Honours list lauds stars of transport universe

A host of eminent figures from across the transport universe have been recognised for their contributions in the King’s New Year Honours list. 

Vernon Everitt, Transport Commissioner, Transport for Greater Manchester received a CBE. Advising Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham and the Combined Authority, Everitt has led the development and delivery of the Bee Network – the city region’s joined-up public transport system.

  CBEs were also awarded to: Ian King, lately Chief Executive Officer, BAE Systems and Lead Non-Executive Director, DfT for services to the Transport and Defence Sectors; Rupesh Mehta, lately Director, Planning, DfT for services to Transport Planning.

 Professor Sarah Sharples, Vice President and Dean of Science and Engineering, University of Manchester, received a CBE for services to transportation, manufacturing research.

Professor Sharples CBE said on LinkedIn: “I feel a bit guilty that I get credit for work that is always a team effort, especially in the world of equality, diversity and inclusion where I've had help from so many people along the way, and we aren't close to being done yet.”

OBEs were awarded to: Jane Cole, Managing Director, Blackpool Transport Services Ltd for services to Public Transport and to the community in Blackpool; Jo Field, Chair, Women in Transport for services to Diversity and Inclusion in Transport; Richard Turfitt, Traffic Commissioner, East of England and lately Senior Traffic Commissioner for services to Road Safety and Justice.

CBs were awarded to: Nicholas Joyce, Director General, Corporate Delivery Group, DfT for services to Transport; Joanna Shanmugalingam, lately Second Permanent Secretary, DfT for services to Transport and Innovation.

MBEs were awarded to: David Astill, Managing Director, Nottingham City Transport for services to Public Transport; Andy Graham, MD of White Willow Consulting, was recognised for services to transport safety and efficiency. Michael McDonnell, Director, Road Safety Scotland for services to Road Safety in Scotland; Mike Redfern-Jones, Group Secretary, North Wales Group of Advanced Motorists for services to Road Safety; Kelvin Reynolds, Chief Technical Services Officer and Company Secretary, British Parking Association for services to Traffic and Parking Management; Donald Starritt, Head, Road Safety Policy, Department for Infrastructure, Northern Ireland Civil Service for services to Road Safety and to Environmental Protection.

 BEMs were awarded to: Joan Barfield for road safety services to the community in Colchester, Essex; Marion Dudgeon. Newcastle Station Support Officer, British Transport Police for services to Transport Policing; Adrian St Clair Emery. Transport Volunteer, Royal Voluntary Service for Voluntary Service; Jonathan Tear, Head of Public Body Reviews, Department for Transport for services to Diversity and Inclusion, and to Charity; Jennifer Turner. School Crossing Patrol. For services to Road Safety.
