The DfT is to terminate the East Coast rail franchise with the Stagecoach/Virgin joint venture in the next few months because of the operator’s mounting losses.
Transport secretary Chris Grayling announced last November that the franchise would end early, in 2020, because of its financial woes. It will be replaced by an East Coast Partnership that will see the train operator and Network Rail work through a single management structure (LTT08 Dec 17).
