Dorset County Council’s cabinet has backed the closure of a staffed foot crossing across the railway in Wareham, despite huge opposition within the town.
The foot crossing immediately east of Wareham station connects a residential neighbourhood to the town centre and is used by more than 1,000 pedestrians and cyclists a day (LTT 07 Mar).
Network Rail wants the crossing closed and the Office of Rail and Road has said it must be closed or improved.
