In response to Ray Bentley’s letter about parking ‘urban myths’ I hope I may bring some historic clarity to parking and yellow lines (Letters LTT 11 Jul).

I was prosecuting hundreds of parkers before traffic wardens, yellow lines and meters were adopted in this country. Prosecution did not have to be because a vehicle was obstructing traffic flow or parked dangerously – they were separate offences. The object was simply to prevent city streets being selfishly used as car...
