Parking charges are not the root of retailers’ woes

Jane Bennett of the Forum of Private Business (Rising parking fees will kill our high streets, PR February) argues that the prime determinant of where people shop is parking charges.

She says that those councils that have kept down parking charges, or kept parking free, “have been rewarded with thriving town centres”. Issues such as prices in the shops, the quality and range of shops or the shopping environment apparently have less or very little impact on where people...
