The true impact of reductions in central government’s settlements for local authorities are becoming all too apparent in headlines about council staff redundancies, reductions in key services and withdrawal of funding for all manner of local community groups. Almost weekly local papers and TV news bulletins carry accounts of councils having to expel the public from budget meetings as residents make their concerns very vocal.
