End of the line for Metrolink trams
Greater Manchester’s original fleet of 32 Metrolink vehicles is to be replaced by new vehicles by 2014. Having approved the replacement of 12 of the T68 trams with new M5000 vehicles last year, Transport for Greater Manchester has now approved plans to replace the remaining 20 in a deal worth £33m. The new vehicles, manufactured by Bombardier and Vossloh Kiepe, are more reliable and ten tonnes lighter, resulting in lower energy costs and less track wear.
