‘Bogus buyer’ car theft is on the rise

Criminals posing as potential purchasers make test drive requests

There has been an increase in the ‘bogus buyer’ vehicle theft method, particularly in the South East of England.

The scam sees criminals targeting vehicle owners advertising their car, van or motorbike for sale privately, via local newspapers or online marketplaces. The victim, being a considerate seller, helpfully gathers everything the crook wants – the vehicle, keys and documentation – in one place.
