New mayors set out transport ambitions

Labour has reinforced its hold over the devolved regions, winning nine of the 10 mayoral elections last week (see table right).

Many of the party’s new or re-elected mayors have pledged to bring bus networks back under public control. Five Labour mayors were re-elected, while three became the first mayors in the new North East, North & North Yorkshire and East Midlands regions.
