NAO exonerates DfT handling of East Coast franchise
The National Audit Office has endorsed the Department for Transport’s decision to hold National Express Group to the terms of its East Coast rail contract – a course which led to NEG handing back the keys to the franchise in 2009 and the business being run by a state-owned company. In its report on the DfT’s approach, the NAO said that disruption to passenger services had been avoided, and that a good deal had been secured for the taxpayer.
