Greens on back foot as climate sceptic heads Defra

Environmentalists have voiced fears that the reshuffle signals a retreat on the environmental agenda and David Cameron’s personal pledge to lead the “greenest government ever”.

There is particular concern about the appointment of Owen Paterson as the new environment secretary. Paterson supports airport expansion, opposes windfarms, wants to end energy subsidies – which are vital to promoting renewables – and is keen to exploit the UK’s shale gas reserves....
