In the late-1980s the fringes of Bristol, Weston-super-Mare and Yate were being covered with a brave new landscape of distributor roads, mini-roundabouts and cul de sacs. In neighbouring Wiltshire a number of towns were being expanded to this model, in particular the county town of Trowbridge.
