South Hants LRT sunk despite high VfM

The DfT refused to reinstate funding for the South Hampshire Rapid Transit (SHRT) scheme last year despite the project still offering 'high' value for money, papers released under the Freedom of Information Act show.

In 2001 then transport secretary John Prescott approved £170m (2003 prices) of public sector contribution (75% central/25% local government) towards the 14km scheme linking Fareham, Gosport and Portsmouth. But transport secretary Alistair Darling withdrew support in 2004...
