There used to be a beautifully simple (pre-computer) technique in astronomy based on taking two photographs at different times of the same patch of sky, mounting them in a simple hand-held frame with one photo for each eye, and clicking between them. From hundreds or thousands of stars and planets, the eye is immediately drawn to the one that ‘jumps’. In a second one can see what would otherwise take hours of painstaking inspection. It works because we have evolved to see movement...
