Conversion of Hertfordshire branch line to trams rests on funding deal

Plans to convert the Watford Junction-St Albans Abbey branch line railway to light rail operation were published for consultation this week by the DfT.

Under the proposals, Hertfordshire County Council would take over responsibility for the service from rail operator London Midland, with the Government transferring to the county the funding that would otherwise have been spent by the rail franchisee.
