Following the success of the inaugural Local Transport Summit last November in Oxford, the second annual event has been fixed to take place in Greater Manchester on the 16th and 17th of November at Worsley Park Hotel & Country Club.
The summit concept was launched to give senior decision-makers and professional experts in local and regional transport the chance to consider the fundamentals of good practice in determining transport strategy, setting priorities, linking transport objectives to wider social and economic ones, and to embrace changing public and political values and technological capabilities and commercial models.
The Department for Transport will once again be partnering with Local Transport Today and Landor LINKS at the event, this time hosted by Transport for Greater Manchester.
This year’s summit will link the discussions to the host area’s current work on a 25 year transport strategy and Greater Manchester’s experience in this process will be explored, including how visions of place, accessibility, economic development and quality of life, can be embraced in creating a successful future transport system.
The summit operates as a 24 hour high level briefing and discussion forum amongst those with knowledge and influence in this sector, taking place in a relaxing and reflective residential environment, including evening networking and a dinner.
The Mayor of Greater Manchester Andy Burnham has been invited to be this year’s guest speaker. This summit will particularly address the way in which professional expertise can be best put at the disposal of political leaders and the wider community in framing and shaping matters requiring decisions in the areas of transport and mobility, and how that can best be done in the context of other key decisions on economic development, housing provision, land use planning and the creation of desirable places, issues of national infrastructure and industrial strategy.
Opportunities are currently available for partner organisations to work with Local Transport Today, TfGM and DfT in scoping out the final content of the summit, ensuring appropriate contributions are made by relevant experts.
