Network rail to trial tram trains next year, with the support of the minister

network rail will trial tram-trains in the north of England with Northern Rail and the Department for Transport in a year’s time, to explore potential benefits for the UK’s heavy rail network.

Speaking at the All-Party Parliamentary Light Rail Group, rail minister Tom Harris said tram-trains could bring “flexibility, and wear and tear related cost reductions”. But, he said, evidence through the trials was

needed before any commitments could be made.
