Last week TRiP (Transport Recycling in Partnership) sent Transit a release about a new range of shoes made from recycled seating moquette. However, one of the attached images (above) seemed a little off message.

			<p>A NUMBER OF people with public transport connections have been awarded New Year honours. Topping the list is Network Rail chairman Ian McAllister who has been awarded a knighthood in recognition of his services to the transport industry. 

Already holding a CBE, he is a former chair and managing director of motor giant Ford&rsquo;s UK operations, and is also chairman of the Carbon Trust. McAllister also holds a senior non-executive directorship of drinks group Scottish &amp; Newcastle.

			<p>A Polish teenager allegedly turned the tram system in the city of Lodz into his own personal train set, triggering chaos and derailing four vehicles in the process. Twelve people were injured in one of the incidents.

The 14-year-old modified a TV remote control so that it could be used to change track points. Local police said the youngster trespassed in tram depots to gather information needed to build the device. The teenager told police that he modified track setting for a prank.</p>]]></description>

			<p>A former rail worker has gone on trial accused of causing millions of pounds worth of damage to the rail network.

Allan Nicol, 48, &ldquo;sabotaged&rdquo; the system by cutting signal cables and starting a &ldquo;massive fire&rdquo; in a building, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

Nicol admits carrying out 12 attacks between 2004 and 2005 but denies arson with intent to endanger life and reckless criminal damage. The court was told Nicol set out to cause maximum disruption and financial loss. </p>]]></description>

			<p>Vandalism across the rail network is on the rise, according to new figures from the British Transport Police. A rail station in south London has been revealed as the most heavily vandalised across the entire network.

Bickley, in Bromley, south London, had 87 instances of vandalism in 2005/06, compared to just three in 2001/02. The 
second-worst station in 2005/06 was Farningham Road, in South Darenth, Kent, with 48 incidents, compared with just five in 2001/02.</p>]]></description>

			<p>Network Rail and Amey Rail have been fined a total of &pound;500,000 and ordered to pay &pound;39,429 costs at the Old Bailey after they pleaded guilty to causing a major train derailment in South West London four years ago.

The derailment happened on November 24, 2002, when a First Great Western train travelling from Swansea to Paddington at around 120mph derailed shortly after it passed through a set of points close to Southall station. There were no injuries to the 450 passengers on board.</p>]]></description>

			<p>Reported crime fell by 3.1% on Britain&rsquo;s railways according to figures published by British Transport Police this week.

79,278 crimes were reported in 2005/06 across England, Scotland and Wales compared to 81,776 in 2004/05. The detection rate moved up from 17.1% in 2004/05 to 20.7% in 2005/06. 

Violent crime showed a 4% increase across Britain&rsquo;s railways, although it was down in Scotland.&nbsp; This is roughly in line with the national trend. Taking out the 431 violent crimes </p>]]></description>
