The independent Thames Estuary 2050 Growth Commission was established in March 2016 to develop an ambitious vision and delivery plan for north Kent, south Essex and east London up to 2050.

The Commission ran a call for ideas from July to September 2016. There were over 100 respondents, including public, private and third sector organisations, and members of the public. The Commission also held visits to the Thames Estuary, including along the river itself.

Sir John Armitt replaced the former Government Advisor on Local Growth, Lord Heseltine, as Chair of the Commission in October 2017. His appointment and that of Deputy Chair, Professor Sadie Morgan, were announced at Budget 2017. The Commission announced its priorities, which included equipping people with the right skills and providing high quality housing, in December 2017.

The Commission has now produced its final report: a 2050 vision document, supported by a technical report and appendix.

The government has published a response to the Commission’s report on 25 March 2019.
