Back in 2015, together with the Guide Dogs, we worked with Simon Hoare MP to sponsor a Private Member's Bill in Parliament which would prevent people from parking on pavements except in places exempted by the council.

At the time, the government agreed that this was a really important issue and asked us to withdraw the Bill so that they could conduct their own research into the best way forward. Following that, we were part of a roundtable chaired by Andrew Jones.

Following that meeting we were told the DfT would conduct their research and report back by the end of the 2016. More than a year later no progress has been made.

Our streets should be inviting and accessible places to walk and vehicles parked on pavements cause an obstruction to us all. At best, pavement parking is a nuisance and at worst, it can put people's safety at risk by forcing them into the road.

London has had a pavement parking ban since 1975 and the Scottish Parliament is due to consult on a national ban shortly.

Outside London, the process required to ban pavement parking road by road is expensive and bureaucratic. The law on pavement parking needs to be simplified – only allowing parking on pavements that have been specially designated to allow it, making it the exception rather than the rule. We fully support more powers being given to local authorities to make this a reality.

Guide Dogs have recently launched a new online campaign action which we support. The petition can be found by clicking here
