Harrogate Borough Council and North Yorkshire County Council will be extending the AppyWay Smart City Parking scheme in Harrogate town centre for a further 12 months.

The Smart City Parking pilot programme was launched in January 2019 and involved the installation of 2,156 bay sensors both at the kerbside and in car parks.

The scheme has seen consolidation of digitised parking data, parking payments and a linear pricing approach into a single solution for the two authorities. This approach enables motorists to locate available parking bays and pay for the exact time they parked via the AppyParking app. The councils, meanwhile, receive real-time bay occupancy and revenue data.

During its first year, surveys show: 39% of users have reported staying longer in Harrogate as a result of not worrying about a pay & display ticket expiring; 21% have saved time finding a car parking space; 66% say that using AppyParking alleviates the stress normally associated with a P&D ticket expiring; and 89% say that AppyParking is more convenient than using a P&D machine.

“We’re delighted to see our Smart City Parking scheme in Harrogate be extended for a further 12 months from July this year,” said Dan Hubert, chief executive of AppyWay. The collaboration with both local authorities has been extremely positive, and the amazing feedback from local residents and visitors to the town is testament to the transformative experience our app provides drivers.

“Not having to worry about your ticket expiring is translating into longer average parking durations of 10 minutes on-street and 50 minutes in car parks, for drivers using our app compared to displaying a ticket. The implication for footfall on the local high-street could be significant, particularly during
challenging times for retailers.”
