The suggestion of foreign secretary Boris Johnson that a bridge should be built across the English Channel received a significant amount of media coverage in mid-January. Despite most commentators suggesting that the idea was little more than an attempt to keep Johnson’s name in the headlines, few could resist giving him the oxygen of publicity that he seems to crave.
