London-West Midlands route is the big flaw in HS2

HS2 continues to attract criticism but a point that tends to be missed is the method of route choice. A serious question is whether the route runs through the Chilterns because phase one of the network was planned in isolation, with the primary emphasis being the shortest route to the West Midlands, along with justifications that are barely still valid (such as access to Heathrow Airport).
