Campaigners in the Greater Manchester Cycling Campaign have attracted media coverage with a video they made to highlight difficulties cyclists encounter with new cycling routes around a Metrolink tram stop.
The video of new provision at Exchange Square shows cyclists competing for space with buses, trams and even large numbers of pedestrians, cycle lanes ending in lay-bys, and cyclists having to cross multiple tram tracks at shallow angles, commenting that it is a "good job that track's not wet or it could have ended in tears".
Nick Hubble of the campaign told the Manchester Evening News that he hoped the video, watched nearly 5,000 times, would highlight an environment that "is hostile for people using cycles". In a consultation on the Metrolink's Second City Crossing, Transport for Greater Manchester said it would provide for cyclists on the cross-town route of Cross Street and Corporation Street.
Peter Cushing, Metrolink director at TfGM, told the newspaper that there were challenges balancing the needs of road users in dense urban areas and he welcomed feedback to help improve cycling provision. He added that the new facilities included alternative cycle routes and signage where necessary and were in line with Office of Rail and Road guidance.
