The West Midlands could become the first place in the UK to introduce battery-powered trams on short sections of track, eliminating the need to install overhead wires in environmentally sensitive locations, or where  installation would be costly.

Spanish tram manufacturer CAF, which recently supplied 21 vehicles for the Midland Metro network, has identified four sections of proposed network extensions where trams could operate with batteries (see map):
