Pang Kin Keong: "Self-driving vehicles can radically transform land transportation in Singapore to address our two key constraints - land and manpower. The trials will help us shape the mobility concepts which can meet our needs."

Singapore announces today it will develop the technology for platoons of driverless trucks for transporting cargo between port terminals, as part of a long-term vision for autonomous vehicles.

The announcement of new memoranda of understanding between the Ministry of Transport and the Singapore port terminals on driverless trucks, and between the ministry and Sentosa Development Corporation on self-driving shuttle services, comes after the approval of trials of self-driving vehicles. Self-driving vehicle protoypes are to be tested along a 6km-long test route in One-North estate first.

The Land Transport Authority, in collaboration with One-North master-planner JTC Corporation, is to implement supporting infrastructure along the test route, including CCTV system to monitor the vehicles; dedicated short range communication beacons to broadcast information on traffic conditions to the vehicles; and signage to create awareness amongst other road users.

The Land Transport Authority has also invited proposals on using self-driving vehicle technology for different applications, including fixed and scheduled services, point-to-point; on-demand services for first- and last-mile travel, and for utility and freight travel. It has received eight submissions from local and international applicants which it is evaluating.

The permanent secretary for transport Pang Kin Keong, who chairs the committee on autonomous road transport in Singapore, declared: "Self-driving vehicles can radically transform land transportation in Singapore to address our two key constraints - land and manpower. The trials will help us shape the mobility concepts which can meet our needs."
