Buses can’t transform cities in the way light rail can

Roger Davies is stating the obvious when he says light rail can’t deliver the flexibility of bus networks (Letters LTT 21 Aug) but it is the fixed nature of tram and light rail systems that offer significant advantages over all-bus networks, not least the ability to attract investment in urban regeneration projects.  

As more than 25 French cities have demonstrated, trams are far from the antiquated transport that he claims and in over 300 cities and towns worldwide they do indeed do...
