Stagecoach's chief executive officer Martin Griffiths has told the FT that devolution of bus powers would lead to higher fares as it fights a rearguard action against the Chancellor backing further bus franchising.
"I challenge the Treasury or any local authority to put forward a bona fide business case to make the structural changes they are talking about," he told the newspaper. "I've not seen it yet and we believe you cannot make the business case for it." Griffiths was speaking after Cornwall became the first county to be given powers over buses as part of a devolution deal, and as the Chancellor prepares to respond to devolution proposals by city regions in his November Spending Review.
The FT claimed earlier that city regions in the West Midlands, Yorkshire, Merseyside and the North East have all overcome their antipathy towards having an elected mayor, the Chancellor's quid pro quo for additional powers.
