Two cycle superhubs have opened in the London Borough of Waltham Forest as part of its Mini-Holland Programme. The first hub opened next to Leytonstone tube station in July while the second, at Walthamstow Central tube station, began operation in  August.

The galvanised steel hubs, designed and installed by cycle parking specialist Falco, are fitted with two-tiered cycle parking racks incorporating three-point locking, flip-down seats, a Sedum green roof and toughened glass panels.

Improved security features will include a telephone help point, CCTV coverage, vandal resistant LED lighting and a fob entry system. Both sites have space for 80 bikes.

The council has commissioned Falco to install hubs at three tube and five mainline stations in the borough over the next year.

Waltham Forest was one of three outer London boroughs to win ‘Mini-Holland’ funding last year from London mayor Boris Johnson to encourage more people to cycle by making routes safer while also providing better streets for pedestrians.

The council received a £27m grant from Transport for London along with £3m from other funding sources.

Its Mini-Holland programme will include segregated cycle tracks along Lea Bridge Road – the route linking Epping Forest and Hackney – and an innovative re-configuring of the Whipps Cross roundabout at the eastern end of Lea Bridge Road.

Over the next two years bike parking and storage is set to increase significantly across Waltham Forest. The council has pledged 1,200 cycle parking stands in town centres, near shops, supermarkets and GP surgeries. It has also installed 30 Bikehangars, which are secure on-street bike parking lockers. It plans to install another 30 by the end of the year and have 100 in place by 2017.
