Labour leadership favourite Andy Burnham has urged that the recommendations of the Airports Commission should be implemented.
The final report of the Davies' Commission is due to be published within weeks, and the Prime Minister is reportedly weighing up not following the advice of the commission, set up by the Conservative-Lib Dem Government to overcome the political deadlock on the issue.
But Heathrow Airport appeared delighted yesterday, re-tweeting news of the shadow health secretary's words, when Burnham said that "when Sir Howard Davies publishes his report - after years of painstaking analysis and debate - on where airport capacity should be, we should act".
Heathrow had spent the week locked in a war of words with Gatwick Airport over the issue of air quality, which the latter said would rule out Heathrow expansion as "unlawful," a claim Heathrow rigorously denied. The intervention of Burnham, Her Majesty's Opposition's heatlh spokesperson, gave it a boost as it sought to argue it could expand whilst improving air quality.
Burnham, backed by former transport, planning and environment secretary John Prescott, did, however, give the caveat that it was "essential that we meet our obligations on climate change and minimise local and environmental impacts".
