Car traffic in Great Britain last year increased by the largest amount since 2002, by 1.9% to 244.5 billion vehicle miles, according to the DfT.

All motor vehicle traffic was 2.4% higher than the previous year in 2014, but remains below the pre-financial crisis peak of 314 billion miles in 2007. After the first three consecutive annual falls since traffic records began, following the crisis, traffic between 2010 and 2013 was stable, but has shown strong growth again.

The DfT statistical release says: "It is not yet clear if this growth is a fluctuation around a stable figure, or if it signals a return to sustained growth."

Van traffic saw the largest percentage rise, of 5.6%, reaching the higest ever total figure of 45 billion vehicle miles - 20% higher than a decade ago. Traffic increased on all types of road, but rural minor roads experienced the largest increase, of 5.5%, and motorways the smallest, 1.6%, but still reaching an all-time high of 64.3 billion vehicle miles.

Buses clocked up 2.8 billion vehicle miles, flat compared to 2013, and down 10% on five years ago, whilst bike miles reached a 24-mile high of 3.2bn.
