The Prime Minister has signalled that the autumn statement will include road upgrades from the south west to the north east of England.
David Cameron, speaking at the Confederation of British Industry's conference this morning, trailed a multi-billion announcement for improvements of the A303 at Stonehenge, the A23 on the south coast, the A47 in East Anglia, the A1 around Newcastle and Trans-Pennine routes.
He said the "first ever long-term roads investment strategy" will include over 100 projects. He said: "We inherited a huge budget deficit and frankly, it would have been easy for us to cancel projects. But we didn't. We know to secure Britain's future, we need world-class infrastructure.
"In three weeks' time you will see an autumn statement where we choose the future again. At its heart is the biggest, boldest and most far-reaching road improvement programme in four decades. The green light given to major projects that have been stalled for years. Action to improve some of the most important arteries in our country, like the A303 and the A1, which for too long have held parts of our country back.
"And all underpinned by £15bn of investment between 2015/16 and 2020/21."
