Defra blames diesel cars for new delay to air quality compliance

The Government has put back the expected date for achieving compliance with EU limits on nitrogen dioxide levels.

Member states were supposed to comply with the European Air Quality Directive by 2010 but could apply to the European Commission for a time extension of five years. 

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) had projected that 16 of the UK’s 43 air quality zones would fail to comply with the annual limit value by 2015.
