It is significant that three of the countries using a Graduated Driving Licence (GDL) for young drivers, Sweden, Norway and Finland, are also noted for their good public transport (‘Dealing with young drivers: to restrict of not to restrict?’ LTT 16 May). However, The Daily Mail tells us that in arguing against a GDL “Cabinet members … feared the effect [restrictions on young drivers] could have on youth employment by preventing young shift-workers doing unsocial hours...
