TfL today launches plans for a new network of cycle routes for central London that include 20 miles of segregated routes for what the Mayor of London describes as "a new kind of cyclist".

The eight segregated 'Superhighways' and the 60 miles of 'Quietways' - where TfL says segregation is not necessary - would often follow the route of Tube lines. The Mayor, Boris Johnson, introducing the consultation, says segregation is necessary on heavy-trafficked roads for those who wish "to cycle slowly, in their ordinary clothes, away from most of the traffic".

Johnson says: "Even if you hate cyclists, the Central London Grid will help you - more people cycling means less traffic, less pollution, more seats on the Tube and the buses." The consultation on the detailed route proposals runs until 14th February.
