Road deaths drop 12% but cycle injuries rise

The number of people killed in road accidents across Britain fell 12% last year from 2,538 to 2,222, official statistics report.

Killed and serious injuries reported to the police in 2009 fell 6% to 26,096. Deaths fell across all modes. Car user deaths fell 16% to 1,059. Pedestrian deaths fell 13% to 500 and pedal cycle deaths fell 10% to 104. Motorcycle deaths fell 4% to 472.
