DfT puts price on extending free travel

Extending London's free bus travel for children and young adults to the rest of England would cost taxpayers between £1.14bn and £1.4bn a year, according to the DfT.

The Department has published estimates for a number of different extensions to the existing concessionary fares scheme that covers over-60s and the disabled.

Free bus travel to/from school for all 5-16 year olds would cost £549m-£673m, says the DfT. All day travel would cost £964m-£1.18bn. Free...
