Govia's Southern Railways keeps South Central franchise

Transport Secretary Andrew Adonis today awarded the South Central rail franchise to Govia subsidiary Southern Railways - the current franchise operator, beating other bidders NedRailways, Stagecoach and National Express to the post.

The new franchise will start on the 20 September 2009 and run until July 2015, and will retain the name “Southern”, Go Ahead has said.

If the franchise fails to achieve its performance benchmarks the Department has the option to terminate a year early...

That's a good decision. Govia have done a good job in improving the Southern image and performance from a customer's perspective. I hope they can further enhance the service on our 'slowcoach' line from London to the Chichester and Bognor Regis area.
